Alright, giving Substack a go.
It’s strange… I was a late adopter of social media, but have grown to love it. Been on internet forums since the dawn of the web, but Twitter is the place where I’ve had the most fun expressing myself — they have really tuned the hell out of a very nimble, effervescent form.
But it’s weird on there now, and I’ve seen forums die before and this is just how it goes. The old guard isn’t having fun with one another anymore. They’re angry and embittered with one another, and topics that once made for good-natured ribbing are now overrun with vitriolic raving.
This is always how forums die.
And maybe I’m wrong, but it doesn’t matter because the fun bit is that these last Dionysian moments are truly intense. Some of the most authentic and genuine interactions happen here, as anonymous handles show their human side as people see the fervor and open up a little bit more to one another.
I do think it’s dying. And I do think that’s a bit sad.
But I’m here for it, too.
Hi everyone, glad to be on board!
100% agree. I've been interested in P2P and want-give platforms since Napster which either mimic or create an ecosystem and sense of community. I curated a personalized feed for 15+ years of daily active use. Entropy comes for all. The way information-sharing culture and communities evolve and adapt in the post-Twitter era will be a fascinating sociological experiment in real-time.
